Main . Me . Indepth . Etc
The following is just some stuff that I am obsessed with and how they are part of my life. I listed them in the order I got into them. For more specifics on stuff I like, click here.
Obsessions
Literature: Maybe they are not much of an obsession nowadays, but it will always be a part of my life. When I was young, books were my solace, my comfort object. I love how reading the books such as Roald Dahl, Lois Lowry, and etc would take me off to another world. Books enriched my thoughts, and it still will in the future. Reading random books is a pleasure.
While studying various aspects of English literature for my degree, I've discovered that I really enjoy the challenges and the interesting stories written by the modern writers. My favourite especially is Ernest Hemingway, whose simplistic style just astounds me. Another writer who have gained my respect is Kurt Vonnegut. I love his black humour and how his stories are filled with science-fiction elements. His commentary on life is amazing.
Music: How can I not put this here. :3 Ever since I joined Band in 7th grade, it fuelled my love for music. My mum, like typical Asian style, made me take the piano in first grade. I quit after two months, and then I went back to it in 6th grade for a year. Since then I'd occasionally play the piano, but because of band, I was more focused on the alto saxophone. Being in band has introduced me to different kinds of music. I've slowly left the mainstream world, and my taste turned more to oldies and classical. Through the influence of band, I've discovered another obsession: conducting. I suck at it but want to improve.
When I was in high school, I was into the mainstream music culture. However, as I grew older and became exposed to Japanese music and classical and instrumental songs, my taste have changed. Now I'm happy to listen to Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach, X-Japan, Janne Da Arc, L'Arc~en~Ciel, Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and so forth so on. Really, though, my musical taste is really eclectic. Because of that, I decided to share my diverse taste at Capriccio.
RPGs: More specifically turn-based RPGs. I suck at action RPGs, except for Kingdom Hearts, but even then I still prefer the former. I love Chrono Trigger, the Gensou Suikoden Series, and the Final Fantasy Series. I have to thank some of my friends for getting me into these games. In fact, they are the same people who got me into my next obsession: Animes.
Animes: Slayers was the first anime that got me into the anime world, but it wasn't the first anime I've seen. Thanks to my group of friends, they've succesfully sucked me into it. Nowadays, I prefer shounen ai/yaoi or slash stuff, but I still love the regular animes. My favourites are: Vision of Escaflowne, Kare Kano, Slayers, and Gundam Wing.
Webpage Designing: Once I got into animes, I got the idea of making a shrine to Zelgadiss Greywords, my favourite character from Slayers. Those were my Geoshitties day. My webpage grew to more of a generic anime webpage, and I slowly got introduced to HTML and graphic designing with Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop. After being with Geoshitties, I convinced my dad to get a domain. Once I did, I experimented with different styles of webpages, and did a lot with it. I still love to make webpages. It's funny how one obsession leads to another in my case, eh? :3
Fanfics: Fanfics are stories written by fans based on a certain fandom. The first fandoms I got into was Slayers and Gundam Wing. This was when I slowly got introduced to shounen ai/yaoi. (Homosexual pairings). The first pairing I ever shipped (supported) was Lina/Zel. Then I got into 1x2, 3x4 from GW. This was when I tried my hand at writing fanfics. Now when I read them, I wince since they are so horribly written.
Movies: I've been watching movies all my life, but it wasn't until DVDs became popular that I actually got into watching movies. Thanks to the dvd technology with the Closed Caption feature, I started to enjoy watching movies. Since I have a slight problem hearing, I prefer reading the subtitles that comes on the screen and watch the movie at the same time. ^_^ Multitasking rules. I adore such movies with Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Gerard Butler, and many more.
Harry Potter: Read the books way back in like 9th grade, but it was around the summer of '02 that I got into the fandom. There I made many new friends, and discovered that I really, really love Slash (Homosexual pairings). The first pairing I got into was Sirius/Remus. Then Snarry, then many others. I got into writing HP fanfics, and slowly improved my writing during my senior year and freshman year of college.
Volunteering: I discovered, especially after my one summer of working, that I prefer working for people that enjoys my help. Over the years of being in band, and being friends with the band teacher's kid, I got to know her and the band room. I'd enjoy helping her, and after I graduated from high school, I went back to her at the beginning of the new school year and asked if I could help her. I mainly did that so I could have something to do other than bum around the home while taking college classes. She allowed me, and I love working for her. Volunteering for someone who appreciates you is the best feeling in the world sometimes.
Mangas: My shounen ai/yaoi/slashiness is all up high these days thanks to the mangas. Not only do the internet provides me some great manga scanalations, but I discovered, thanks to my friends, that there's this manga store in Korea. Korean translated mangas are so cheap (like $3.00ish a volume). At the store, I have access to a whole bunch of yaoi mangas that it's not even funny. I never knew Korea had a pretty large following of that genre of mangas/animes/etc. :3 Now my favourite manga series is Love Mode.
Role Playing: Top off with my shounen-ai/yaoi/slashiness influences and the love to write, I've gotten back into RPing. It's so much fun creating brand new characters and putting them through situations. It's especially fun playing gay men! I first got into this in October 2003, but then lost interest once my buddy lost pc access. Now one of my friends who's an RP manic, influenced me into starting it up again! I'm so glad. It gives me something to do and makes my creativity comes out.
